2018 – The Vegan Diet

Every January we all tend to plan for the summer. For sure, we all talk about getting in perfect shape so we can proudly present our healthy bodies when we wear those cloths for the summer. And we proudly say that “the vegan diet” is in. Yes!!!!!

Do you remember those days when were told of animal protein in pursuit of the perfect body? It wasn’t too long ago of that. Not even a decade has pass by and look at the progress we have seeing. From Atkins as the perfect road to follow, to today: people are now turning towards plant-based diets due to ethical and health reasons (a study by the American College of Cardiology found that plant-based proteins are healthier than animal proteins for heart health). We can ALL clearly say that the vegan diet is a REAL viable option for someone looking to go easier on their system. Plants are easily digestible and packed with antioxidants and fiber, making a plant-based diet, a fantastic option.

Dr Joel Kahn, renowned plant-based cardiologist, and author of the No 1 Bestseller The Whole Heart Solution, shares his point of view on why a plant diet is the BEST option.

Plants and Vegetables

Plant foods can sustain all phases of life from pregnancy to old age. Perfect for proper digestion, less expensive and thousands of varieties available to satisfy any taste. “A vegan diet offers the best opportunity to lead a life free of medication, doctor visits, and chronic diseases. It offers the best chance of an ideal body weight. It can be rewarding to know that the diet offers a step to heal the planet and avoid animal suffering.”

Can the vegan diet MAKE the difference?

“The science is clear since the 1950s that diets free of animal foods, like the vegan diet can reverse disease, particularly heart disease, the number one killer in the world. Renowned health experts such as Nathan Pritikin, Dr Dean Ornish, Dr Neal Barnard, Dr Caldwell Esselstyn and others to be able to halt and reverse heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and prostate cancer. Psoriasis often disappears.”

Animal Protein

“No animal, neither a cow, sheep, turkey or fish, can make all the amino acids needed for human health. Only plants do that. By eating plants, the flesh of animals does concentrate those amino acids. We can eat animal flesh or we can go to the source, plants. Animals come with saturated fats, amino acids like leucine in high concentration that trigger ageing pathways, amino acids like L-carnitine that trigger production of TMAO (Trimethylamine N-oxide increases risk of adverse cardiovascular events) and clog arteries. Of course, we are all aware the damage that pesticides and hormones found in ALL meats. In today’s market, people understand the risk of cancer when you consume meats, particularly breast and colon cancer. Plants BRING the opposite. They bring healing and life to our bodies.

“Studies like the Adventist Health Study, the Blue Zones (areas where people have lived the longest) and others show that diets with only plant foods or nearly only plant foods have the lowest rates of obesity, heart disease, various cancers, type 2 diabetes, psoriasis and other disorders”.

What are the MOST common mistakes we make?

“The two most common mistakes are eating junk food that has no animal components like soda and chips, and not adding enough whole foods like beans, rice, whole vegetables, fruits and spices. Junk food of any kind produces a junk body. The second major mistake is so simple that sometimes it really surprises all – not supplementing. A pure plant diet needs supplements. It is true that most people take small doses of vitamins B12, D3 and algae based omega 3 as EPA and DHA.” So, make sure if you have a vegan diet that you will take all these points in consideration before embarking on such road. And have a healthy summer!
